Sigurður received a B.Sc. degree in biology from the University of Hawaii where he conducted research related to the ecology of endemic Hawaiian land snails. He finished his master’s degree in biology at the University of Iceland where he specialized in cytogenetics and population genetics of plants. Sigurður is currently working towards a Ph.D. degree in biology in a joint program at the University of Iceland and Hólar University College where he specializes in the ecology and evolution of freshwater fishes. Sigurður is passionate about ecology and evolution, having a particular interest in using natural variation within and among wild populations as a tool to understand the evolution of biological diversity. He is the current director of The Nature Research Institute of the Westfjörds in Bolungarvík and takes an active role in the numerous research projects for which the institution is responsible.
